In the Beginning...

Prompt as usual on this bucolic summer day, our illustrious leader, Bill Gilbreth rang the bell. As Pavlov to his drool, we knew it was time to start the meeting.  After quickly settling into our seats, Bill welcomed us for attending.

Tony Thacher started with our flag salute, and Nathan Kaehler gave us our invocation for the day.  Then it was time for luncheon, and escorting our many guests, as we have been taught.

Bill rang the bell again and wasted no time in thanking those who made this meeting possible.  Matt Clements and his crew for set-up.  Greeters Mary Hatch and Jack Jacobs.  Tony and Nathan for the above mentioned duties.  Roving mic, Marc Whitman.  Don Reed & Lerie for running the front desk.  And Mike Malone as reminder editor.

Visiting Rotarians:

Linda Taylor from Ojai West Club brought her exchange student, Joey Tisseron.  Joey is from France, and will be studying at Nordhoff for the semester.  Visiting us today also, is Past District Governor, Jack McClenahan.  Jack is very well known to our club and the Ojai Valley. He was a former member of our Club.

Visitors:

Bill Prather introduced John & Kathy Brosamle, and Carolyn Vondriska.
Patricia Teague Anderson introduced our speaker for today, Mark Frost.  Jenny Owen brought her husband Rod Owen.  Betsy Watson introduced again, Leslie Golden.  Bill Kaplan, Joey Tisseron, and Lisa Malone rounded out the visitors.  Bill then asked Joey to come up front and say a few words.  Joey has been studying at Nordhoff for a few weeks now, everything is different, but cool!  He also asked the club why we don’t host a Rotary exchange student?  There was some mumbling, but someone thought somewhere we had.

Announcements:

Bill announced several upcoming meetings:

-Youth Service Committee will be meeting here, after todays regular meeting.

-Education Foundation Board of Directors will meet @ 7a.m. next Tuesday at Café Emporium.

-International Service Committee will meet at 7:30 Tuesday, Sept. 20th at Café Emporium.  We are so proud of the fact that our club has international projects all over the world.  Bosnia, Cuba, Ghana, India, Niger, Roatan & Tibet.  All members are encouraged to attend these meetings.

-Rotary Foundation $26.50 Project: Lerie said she made the mistake of getting so swept up in Dist. Gov. Nick Frankles speech last week, she volunteered to oversee our chapters inclusion.  She did not expect to see checks come in daily, either in the mail, or just handed to her on the street.  Even non-Rotarians have been donating.  Her son joined in because he saw how happy it made his mom, he now refers to the project as her “Endorphin Fund” or Happy Mail.  Please make your checks out to TRF or The Rotary Foundation.  Annual contributions also count.

-Taste of Ojai committee meeting will be next Tuesday, Sept. 13th 12:00 p.m. at Mike Malone’s office .   We are winding down to the final two months.  Be there or be square!

-Theatre Event:  Our trip to the Rubicon to see “Moonlight and Magnolias” will be tomorrow night.  We have 5:30 dinner reservations at Café Zack.  Please see Bill for your tickets.

Editor's Note:  The trip to the Rubicon was a great success with a sumptuous repast at Café Zak's and "Moonlight and Magnolias", a comedy based on true events surrounding the rewrite of script for Gone with the Wind.  A great time was had by all!

Fining and Confessions

Wendy Barker stepped up, and lowered the microphone to start off with confessions.  Rod Owens handed out flyers a fundraiser on Saturday, September 17th, right here at Soule Park Golf Course.  No previous golfing experience necessary, it’s all for a good cause to raise money for the Ojai Valley Family Shelter.

Other confessions came from Charley Thompson, Jack Jacobs, Carl Gross, and Bill Prather, for a variety of sins.  Mostly of the birthday/anniversary/vacation/and just for the fun of it kind.  But Wendy was only getting started, and whipped out her list of those who dared not pre-pay for fining!  Family questions about twins, who is 1st born, 2nd, or last born.  Everyone got them wrong except Scott Smith.  We all learned much more about family dynamics.

Program:

Patricia Teague Anderson introduced todays speaker.  Mark Frost has been writing since he was 10, and after a few journeys across the US, landed in Hollywood.  Has been involved in TV productions like The $10 million Dollar Man, Hill Street Blues, and Twin Peaks.  Has written 4 works of fiction,  including “The Greatest Game Ever Played”.

He and his family moved to Ojai 4 years ago, and he has no inclination to move again.  Then Mark Frost took over the podium, and wowed us with his narrative.

Instead of speaking about his new book coming out “Twin Peaks Revisited”, he chose to honor his great-uncle Will who wrote a book published in 1963 entitled “Off the Record with FDR”.  Will started a journal in January 1942, while he was still a AP reporter.  He continued writing in his journal for the next several decades. He was first assigned to the White House, and then became the first secretary assigned to FDR.  He served FDR until his death, and then went on to serve Truman until they both retired in 1953.  Wills book was described as the most intimate portrait of FDR ever written.  He lived at Hyde Park in Warm Springs, and witnessed many momentous events unfold during the war years.
Will died at the age of 85 in his home town in Vermont.
