Speakers – Lisa Rosas introducing Shauna Mistretta
2 years ago Lisa and Shauna went to Kenya together to learn more about the cultural traditions and plight of the Maasai people of the Esiteti village in Tanzania. The Massai are a semi nomadic ,patriarchal pastoralist people struggling with displacement from their traditional lands and working to hold onto their culture despite  various factors including colonialization. There are currently approximately 1 million Massai who live between Kenya and Tanzania. The village of Esiteti works with about 800 Masaai people that live between Kenyan and Tansania, the village itself if located at the base of Mt Kilamenjaro. The Maasai live in communion with and  consider themselves the protectors of the local wildlife. The Maasai are the official land owners who lease the park lands to Kenya Wildlife services, who can use it for wildlife tourism and protection as parklands. The men continue to participate in a pastoral nomadic lifestyle, while the women are transitioning to a more agrarian lifestyle centered at one village.
There has been some scrutiny of this group due to perceived human rights violations for women including FGM, bodily autonomy, early and polygamous marriage, and property rights, under the umbrella of protecting a traditional lifestyle.
Lisa enjoyed the community, connection and sense of joy on her trip while she had the opportunity to teach art in a local school. She will return in June, with kids. She feels that their value system that is different from ours, and is based on love and joy
Shauna Mistraud. -started her journey by creating global access for women’s crafts groups in Africa. Social beads of City, helped create economic growth and allow increased entrepreneurship for women . She also worked with the Mala foundation, the Kenya youth project  and has really appreciated the resilience of human spirit and finding an environment where people connect authentically
Shauna is also the Cofounder of the Institute of Emerging Visionaries which supports youth in seeking opportunities in global service work
Shauna thanked Rotary for their ongoing NGO work , stepping in to help when governments can’t.
She started aid work by helping  women start a beading program, and provided access to global markets and enhanced entrepreneurship. Beading has been a traditional income source. The money from this project helped to sustain the village and start a local government school
After motherhood Shauna pivoted to lead small groups to Kenya to meet the Maasai for a week, and participate in  traditional activities, and learn about what support they would like and could benefit from.
These trips include opportunities to experience traditional Massai chores such as gathering water with the women, and seeing firemaking practices, staying in a model village, and interacting with children at the local school.
The proceeds from these trips have helped some of the women attend college, support women’s businesses, support local permaculture farming practices, and support a mobile health clinic
Shauna also discussed partnership with Robert Marouthy  who has some support from our club.
Shauna worked with Vanessa Stone to create the One Villiage Project which helps 18-30 year olds  live in alignment with their core values, Shauna met a Young Kenyan man whose mother had cervical cancer. They were abandoned by their community which lead Robert to  sell bricks to raise funds for treatment for his mom. Although his mom passed away, Robert now runs mobile clinics all over Kenya to screen for cancer. He has provided 10k screenings, especially focused on women’s health cervical cancer.
Email :shauna@emergingvisionaries.org for more information about upcoming travel opportunities and other ways to get involved.
