Carl A. Gross, Editor

September is Basic Education and Literacy MonthMonth

Are you an established professional who wants to make positive changes in your community and the world? Our club members are dedicated people who share a passion for community service and friendship.
Our 1.4million-member organization started with the vision of one man—Paul P. Harris. The Chicago attorney formed one of the world’s first service organizations, the Rotary Club of Chicago, on 23 February 1905 as a place where professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships. Rotary’s name came from the group’s early practice of rotating meetings among the offices of each member.

Momento del museo

Ms. Barker shared with us a matchbook from the Oaks Hotel, circa 1955 donated by Chris Williams.  The hotel was known as the El Roblar, opened in 1920. It was designed by Frank Mead and Richard Requa and built by Robert Winfield at a cost of $50,000. It was renamed the Oaks in 1953 by new owner, Frank Keenan and reopened in 1954.  The matchbook included the old phone numbers which were changed in 1962.

Multa

Ren Adam was the pinch hitter for fining. He limited his session to confessions:

DeWayne Boccali announced his annual harvest festival at his restaurant with food, fun, his son, Joe’s Blue Latitude band, and, with minimal urging, DeWayne Will sing.

Jeff Loebl picked up a banner from another Club.

Terry Beckett celebrated his birthday with a contribution to the Rotary Foundation.

El Programa

Kathy Yee introduced her neighbor and good friend, Pradeep Dhillon. She received her PHD in Philosophy of Education and completed a Post Doctoral fellowship in the Department of Comparative Literature, Both from Stanford University

She taught in the Philosophy of Education Program at the University of Illinois, Urbana-champagne.

She is the author of two books and several papers and has Lectured in China,India,Europe and Tanzania.

She served as the editor of the Journal of Aesthetic Education for twenty two years.

Upon retiring in 2022she was appointed as Associate Professor Emerita and continues to publish and teach.

Ranjit and Pradeep moved from Illinois to Ojai to be near their daughter who is a physician at USC and their 2 year old grandson Arun.

On a personal note.  They are generous contributors to our community, offering music, opening their home to the Music Festival events and are often seen walking their grandson around the Arbolada making friends.

We are so fortunate to have them in our community and we are lucky to call them friends.

Pradeep moved to Ojai in 2018 and gave of her time and talents generously.

U. S. Embassy

She spoke of architecture as a mode of expression and relations with surroundings.  From the extensive use of glass in the Finish embassy, they communicate transparency to the rather stodgy designs of the Soviet embassy, again communicating.

Belgian Embassy

Somaesthetics is useful in thinking about how buildings gesture. Analysis and interpretation of three embassies – the Belgian and US embassies in New Delhi, India and the Finnish Embassy in Canberra, Australia, offer insight into the nature of architectural gestures.
Finnish Embassy

Thank-You for an informative and interesting look at the art and communication of architecture.

Our President presented Pradeep with fruits from Friend’s Ranch.

Recomendaciones de hoy

We had two recommendations from our members:

Fern suggested the podcast from Huberman Lab with medical information relating to current trends. Click here for a link to the podcasts.

Kay Bliss recommended a book, American Nations: A History of the 11 regional cultures that make up North America. Kay described the book as “Phenomenal! Especially Good to read in an election year”.

President Barker rang the meeting to a close and wished everyone a great weekend.
