Ojai Rotary Reminder Newsletter
August 19th to 26th

Haady Lashkari, Editor

August is Membership and Extension Month

Are you an established professional who wants to make positive changes in your community and the world? Our club members are dedicated people who share a passion for community service and friendship.
Our 1.2 million-member organization started with the vision of one man—Paul P. Harris. The Chicago attorney formed one of the world’s first service organizations, the Rotary Club of Chicago, on 23 February 1905 as a place where professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships. Rotary’s name came from the group’s early practice of rotating meetings among the offices of each member.

In the Beginning...

Co-Presidents Bliss & Babayco welcomed club members and guests.

Leslie Bouche led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Bill Prather led the invocation:

Let us keep our hearts focused on the needs of all in our community and above all may we have Hope and may we give Hope.

For Hope is a gift.

Hope soars upwards when all else is falling.

Hope rides high on the stormy seas.

Hope dances in the darkest places.

Hope rings out across the fields when there is devastation.

Hope remains strong amidst crushing burdens.

Hope opens hearts that have been neglected or rejected.

Hope declares that life and true love will always prevail!

May the leaders that guide and direct our club and our actions,

Always have Hope.

May each of us feel our responsibility to Rotary, to our community, to our

country, and to the people of all countries around the world.

May each of us have and give to people all around the world Hope!

Dr. Art Vander “Brain Plasticity: the Amazing Ability of the Brain to Reorganize Itself”

Arthur J. Vander, MD, comes to us after a distinguished career as a Professor of Physiology at the University of Michigan both as a teacher and researcher for three decades. He is the author of several textbooks and numerous articles in the field of physiology, in layman’s terms the way we are constructed and are able to function.

He also served as an administrator on many departmental, university, and national committees dealing with education and a variety of other issues ranging from animal care to academic freedom to misconduct in research.

Upon his retirement in 1990 he was chosen as the first recipient of the University of Michigan Medical School’s Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Dr. Vander and his wife Judy, a music composer among other things, reside in our Valley and can often be seen hiking the hills around us or out on the Channel Islands. They are both Rotary Clubs of Ojai Living Treasures.

His talk was on Neural plasticity, also known as neuroplasticity or brain plasticity, which can be defined as the ability of the nervous system to change its activity in response to intrinsic or extrinsic stimuli by reorganizing its structure, functions, or connections.

Closing Remarks:

President Babayco reminded the club next week is the Lunch Mob! We return September 2nd for meeting and program.

He also finished with a “Life Hack”:

The biggest lie we tell ourselves is: “I don’t need to write this down because I will remember it”.
