Arbor Day!
In the beginning…
On a splendid fall day Past President Betsy Watson called Rotarians together to celebrate Arbor Day at Mira Monte School. Betsy was subbing for our beloved President Sue.

Sue's brother Steve came from his home in Montana to visit with us. Steve has spent his career with the Forest Service so he felt right at home with our Arbor day ceremony.

Surrounded by children, Bret explained why trees are so important:
We gather today not in a boardroom but under the quiet authority of trees-and in the lively company of children who still understand something we adults tend to forget: that growth is not a transaction but a process.
There is a line often attributed to Wendell Barry: “The earth is what we all have in common”. Simple enough to fit in a child’s pocket and deep enough to occupy a lifetime”.
Today we honor that idea through the work and legacy of Al West, who has spent a lifetime thinking not in quarters or election cycles, but in rings, those quiet, patient markers of time that trees keep far better than we do.
And we see it in these students, who remind us that stewardship isn’t abstract. It’s learned. It is practiced. It’s passed down-like shade, like roots, like trust.
And if we are lucky, to plant something today-an idea, a habit, a tree-that will outlast us.

Then Al West performed the ceremony of planting a sycamore tree, a ceremony he has presided over countless times.
