Tessa Turner, Editor

Are you an established professional who wants to make positive changes in your community and the world? Our club members are dedicated people who share a passion for community service and friendship.
Our 1.4 million-member organization started with the vision of one man—Paul P. Harris. The Chicago attorney formed one of the world’s first service organizations, the Rotary Club of Chicago, on 23 February 1905 as a place where professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships. Rotary’s name came from the group’s early practice of rotating meetings among the offices of each member.

In the beginning…

Sue Gilbreth was here today to lead our meeting. So nice to have her with us.

Al West led the Pledge of Allegiance

Wendy Barker gave us the inspirational moment:

We were encouraged to renew our New Year's Resolutions because most of us  have given up     on them by this time. Wendy advised us to make fun resolutions.  She said to put on our lists  things that make us happy.....things we want to do this year. Consider making resolutions that make our life more enjoyable. Wendy has resolved to buy herself flowers,  to visit new museums,  and to go to the beach this summer.

Sue invited guests and visiting Rotarians to be first in line for a nice lunch prepared by Jayne Cruise.

Many thanks to our meeting crew today: Dave Watson, Deirdre Daly, Cindy Frings, Taundra Roddick,  Fern,  Dave Brubaker and Tessa Turner.

Program

Our speaker today is Luis P. Sanchez from The Madison-Lincoln Initiative and was introduced by Bruce:

The Madison-Lincoln Initiative was founded by Luis Sanchez, a two-time community college president, long time educator, and a practicing attorney. The Board of Directors comprises civic leaders, business owners, educators and other friends of democracy, dedicated to preserving our constitutional republic for future generations.

Formed in 2022 in response to a global trend of authoritarian governments and dictators who seek to undermine our nation's Constitutional restraints on executive power and on the rights and liberties of the citizens. There has been alarm over  the demise of civil discourse, the proliferation of false and misleading news and social media sources, and the abrogation of ethical standards for elected officials. The MLI believes that a main cause of these maladies is our collective  failure to adequately educate our children about what it takes to maintain our 250-year experiment in representative democracy.

The Madison-Lincoln Initiative is a non-profit, nonpartisan California corporation dedicated to promoting and fostering civic education and democratic engagement in K-12 and college throughout America.

Their five foundational pillars: 1.Constitutional literacy

                                                     2. Civil discourse

                                                     3. Media literacy

                                                     4. Critical Reasoning

                                                     5. Elective Integrity

Ways we can support schools or colleges include:

                                                     1. Help start or support a student club for democratic engagement.

                                                     2. Give a presentation to a class or assembly on the 5 pillars of civic

                                                         education.

                                                     3. Provide professional development workshops for your staff.

Mr Sanchez answered questions and encouraged us to help financially, with leadership or by spreading the word.

Sue closed the meeting with a quote from  Abraham Lincoln: "Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe".
