The Rotary Club of Ojai

Ojai Rotary Reminder Newsletter
October 6th, 2023

Christine Fenn, Editor

October is Community and Economic Development Month
Are you an established professional who wants to make positive changes in your community and the world? Our club members are dedicated people who share a passion for community service and friendship.
Our 1.4 million-member organization started with the vision of one man—Paul P. Harris. The Chicago attorney formed one of the world’s first service organizations, the Rotary Club of Chicago, on 23 February 1905 as a place where professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships. Rotary’s name came from the group’s early practice of rotating meetings among the offices of each member.

What is so exciting about February 18th you might ask? It was in fact the day in 1930 that Clyde Tombaugh discovered the planet Pluto!  Pluto is named after the Roman god of the underworld, has five known moons, is on average -387 degrees Fahrenheit, is one third water, cannot be seen by the naked eye, and is part of the Kuiper Belt; an area full of icy bodies and other dwarf planets past Neptune. Sadly, Pluto was reclassified as a Dwarf Planet in 2006, officially stripping it of its standing as the ninth planet in our solar system. Currently, there is much debate about potentially 13 planets in total including the Dwarf Planets Ceres, Haumea, Makemake and Eris. In honor of Pluto's once prestigious standing I offer the following poem.

An Ode to Pluto

Oh proud caboose of our system's train!
I have often searched the stars in vain
In hopes that my eyes might attain
A glimmer of your frosty plains

So can you imagine my surprise
When astronomically wise guys
seized upon your compact size
And robbed you of the number 9!

Oh the outrage, oh the shame!
To take from you that lofty claim
Science-fair mobiles forever changed
A Roman god now floats defamed

Yet though they preach with PHDs
and telescopic wizardry
No matter what they might decree
You'll always be a planet to me

Announcements:

Registration is starting 11/17 for a trip to India 1/29/24-2/10/24, Trip cost is approximately $3,500. This is an amazing opportunity for us to continue the incredible strides being made to eradicate Polio Worldwide. There are only 7 cases reported in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Amazing!

Kay spoke about our Peace Day and Peace Pole dedication (on behalf of Cheree) as slides of the day were being shown on the screen. shared our Peace day with a school in the Ukraine that inspired them to dedicate their own "Ukranian Wand of Peace", on the day they honor the "Day of the Defenders", those who have lost their lives protecting the people of Ukraine. It is amazing how Peace
begets Peace.
