Ojai Rotary Reminder Newsletter
May 12th, 2017
May is Youth Service Month
In the Beginning...

On this picture perfect day in Ojai, President Bill rang us into a collective quiet and started todays meeting. Clubbing the podium (really, the gavel was missing), Bill asked Greg Webster to lead us in the flag salute.  Marty Babayco gave the invocation, “10 Things my Mother Taught Me” (all true, by the way), then we noted a moment of silence for his mother who passed away last Sunday.  Then we headed for lunch.  Thank you Ginger!

Bill got the program rolling by thanking all those who make it happen.  Matt Clements, and Bryant Huber for set-up.  Todays greeters, Greg Webster and Mike Malone.  Marty and Greg for the above, Matt again for roving mic, and Mike Malone for reminder editor.  The front desk was ably handled by Tony Thacher, who is remarkably good at taking our money.

Announcements:

With such a busy club, it is no wonder we have so many announcements.

Tony Thacher wanted to remind everyone of the upcoming movie “Ghost Town to Havana”, which will be shown at the Matilija Auditorium on May 26th. Tickets available several places, including from Tony.  He will also need about 6 people to help out on the night of the film, please email him if you can help.

Suzanne Scar announced the meeting next Friday the 19th where we will be handing out scholarships.

There was also a moment of silence for Roxanne Nomura, who passed away this week.  Roxanne was the wife of our past District Governor, Wade Nomura.  Bill said that he has authorized a global grant to Kay Bliss.

Confessions and Fining:

Bruce Brockman started with a confession for himself. He and his wife just came back from Texas and the wedding of his son and new daughter in law.

Matt Clements son recently ran his 1st marathon.

Jack Jacobs paid a fine to hear Bruce’s “Wisconsin” accent.

Jane McCarthy was honored to be at the Brockman wedding.  The fining sequence followed with scores of Mother’s Day trivia which few of us could answer, and a couple of Mothers Day stories.

Program:

Sandy B. introduced Jamie Miller, Director of the Ojai Music Festival.  The festival starts next month for its 71st anniversary, and Jamie spoke about the many Music Directors the festival has had.  He really wanted to talk about the Bravo program the festival sponsors, so he introduced Laura Walter.  Bravo brings music education to students in the Ojai school system. Laura and her staff visit every school for 30 minutes, once a week, every week school is in session year round.  She ran through the many programs they offer to students of all ages, from K-12.  Laura is able to draw on the expertise of many friends and colleagues to enrich the experience, usually volunteering their time.  Laura explained that at first, many teachers thought they were just playing.  They now realize the reward of music for its own sake.  Teachers now become involved so they can see their students progress.  Laura thanked Rotary for supporting the Ojai Music Festival and their support of their outreach programs.

After thanks, handshakes and citrus, Bill concluded the meeting with a Mothers Day story of his own.
