Introduction

On a warm and sunny Bastille Day, Ojai Rotarians gathered for fellowship and service.  President Malone gaveled the meeting to order, Sid Cohn did the salute, Colin Jones gave the invocation, and the meeting got underway.  President Mike thanked all those who helped with the meeting prep, especially Ginger, without whom things would be grim indeed. President Mike announced that we had two special guests:  District Governor John Weiss and Assistant DG Susan Weaver.

District Governor John Weiss

ADG Susan Weaver introduced John Weiss, District Governor and gave an overview of his CV.  John has been very active in the Morro Bay Rotary Club and has been especially energetic in bringing new members into Rotary.  So far, John has attracted over 50 new members.!

John then started his comments summarizing his thoughts about Rotary with the admonition: “Smile when you write that check”.   He then retold the saying of Cliff Dockerman:  “is it fun?”; “will anyone get hurt”?, “will anybody find out?”.  With that as an opener, John expanded his remarks along these lines:
·        What can we do to make our club fun?
·        What motivates people to join Rotary?  Friendship and Service.

John then went back to February 23, 1905, when Rotary was founded, and talked about those qualities that have helped Rotary endure and flourish all over the world.  He asked Ojai Rotarians what Rotary means to them, and got the following heartfelt responses:

·        Family and Friendships
·        Chance to serve
·        Helping Children
·        Making a difference
·        Community
·        4-way test
·        Integrity

Growing Membership

President Mike asked John for some tips on how to grow membership.  John gave two recommendations:  first, invite a potential candidate to see a project up close, so he can see concrete results from Rotary membership.  Second, invite a non-member to give a talk about his business, so that non-member can experience the comradery of Rotary.
